Harriet Tarlo

from "Particles (Cumbrian Coast, 2008)", 2008

“Particles (Cumbria 2008)”, was originally composed to accompany the photographer Jem Southam’s “Clouds Descending” exhibition at the Lowry Gallery, in early 2009. A selection of the pieces will move on to Tullie House in Cumbria with the rest of the exhibition at the end of 2009. The whole sequence is published in Jem Southam, Clouds Descending, Lowry Press, 2008. It is based on notes taken during walks along the coast with Jem Southam over three days in June 2008. The work evolved into an independent poem making use of site specific experience, subsequent research into the area's history and conversations with people encountered on the coast.

Harriet is a poet and academic whose books include Love/Land (REM Press, 2003), Poems 1990-2003 (Shearsman Books, 2004) and Nab (Etruscan Books, 2005). She is currently editing an anthology, The Ground Aslant: Radical Landscape Poetry for Shearsman Press (forthcoming 2010), preparing a new collection of poetry and working on a critical/creative text for the University of Bangor's Placing Poetry project. She works as freelance and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at Sheffield Hallam University.
